1. Workshop Immersive dramaturgy | Celine Daemen & Aron Fels | June 18
Director Celine Daemen creates transdisciplinary performances at the intersection of music theatre, visual arts, and immersive media.
With her virtual reality opera Songs for a Passerby, Celine Daemen won the Grand Prize in the ‘Immersive’ category at the 2023 Venice Biennale.
On June 18, Celine Daemen will be in Brussels to lead a workshop on immersive dramaturgy, together with art director and tech dramaturg Aron Fels. How can you use technology as an artistic storytelling tool, and how can VR be used to tell a story? Celine and Aron will offer a behind-the-scenes look at how Songs for a Passerby came to life, and how they learned to creatively apply immersive technologies such as virtual reality, live volumetric video, and interactive, spatial audio soundscapes.
About Songs for a Passerby
In Songs for a Passerby, you put on a VR headset and wander through a musical dreamscape. This virtual reality opera explores our unstable relationship with the transient nature of reality. How do we relate to a world of passing things? Are we part of it, or merely observers? Are we a body, or do we have a body? You seemingly step outside yourself and follow your own 3D reflection as it moves through a series of poetic scenes: a dying horse, a choir of murmuring voices, two dogs at play.
Tip: You can experience Songs for a Passerby at Bozar in Brussels from June 18 to 27. More info via Bozar.
Over songs for a Passersby
2. Workshop Exploring Embodied Algorithmic Dramaturgies | Amir Sám Nakhjavani | June 26
Amir Sám Nakhjavani works across stage and screen as an actor, and as a motion-capture and voice-over artist in the games industry. He co-founded Something Magic, a collective exploring XR storytelling in performance.
On June 26, Amir will give an experimental workshop for theatre, dance, and performance professionals interested in exploring how AI and digital avatars integrate with embodied dramaturgy. Together, you’ll investigate how artificial intelligence and avatars can act as co-performers: repeating, delaying, looping, hallucinating. The starting point is mimesis: how we imitate – and are imitated. Through improvisation, group devising, and critical reflection, you’ll engage with generative language models, motion-capture avatars, and glitch aesthetics to uncover what performance becomes in a digitally augmented space – and how this co-creation can be rich in both comedy and dramaturgy.
No coding or technical experience required; just a readiness to explore, respond, and play with uncertainty. Ready to dive in?
___________
